The Ultimate Baby Emergency Car Kit

I like to think I've smartened up a bit now that I'm a mom of two from almost a whole year. But probably not. One thing I've learned is that there is no such thing as being over prepared when it comes to stepping foot out of the house with kids. Too many times I've been out without something essential that we need....like diapers, or a sippy cup, or a change of clothes. Yep...that wasn't too fun.

So today I'm sharing how I stock my car with all of our emergency essentials for when we are out and about. Keeping these things in my car (instead of carrying them around in my bag all the time) makes life so much easier! I have two small flexible baskets in my car. One for emergency essentials and one for books/games/toys.

Here's what I keep in our car basket #1
-an extra nursing cover
- two swaddle blankets
- a sweatshirt for each child in case it gets cold
- one sippy cup per child
- snacks that won't go bad right away (goldfish crackers, apple sauce pouches, juice box)
- bib
- a change of season appropriate clothes for each child (plus socks/undies)
- wipes (these are the ONLY ones I'll ever use)
- a wet bag
- Also (not pictured) one towel, one heavy blanket, and a 1st aid kit

I've found that having two nursing covers (one that's kept in the car and one that's in the house/my bag) has really come in handy....especially because having two kids has made me really forgetful! And you can never have too many swaddle blankets...they are great for keeping warm, snuggling up in the car for a nap, and blocking the sun for your toddler.

I try to remember to go through this basket every week or so to make sure I re-stock any supplies we used, freshen up the snacks, and make sure the extra clothing and diapers are the right season and right size!

And in car basket #2...the fun stuff! This basket sits in the back seat in between Hudson and Sadie's carseats. It's mostly filled with stuff for Hudson to grab to entertain himself while we are driving.
- a magna doodle
- several large books
- flash cards
- baby toys
- mini sound machine
- water wow coloring book
- flash cards

Having just a few toys and books (I've found large books to be the easiest to keep track of and grab out of the basket) to be a lifesaver when we have a busy day of running errands. Plus Hudson loves playing with some special car toys from time to time. And look closely at the above photo...can you spot Sadie's hand? She's a fan of the car basket too!

I make sure to stock our emergency car kit with our favorite diapers, Huggies Little Snugglers, and Huggies Natural Care wipes. Let's be real...these bad boys are stashed all around our house and my purse. I'm never without a diaper...except that one time....and lesson learned.

There is no diaper I trust more than Huggies Little Snugglers to keep Sadie happy, healthy, and dry. They must be doing their job because she looks pretty happy here, don't you think?

  1. We are huge fans of those baskets inside for all our toys! Maybe I'll have to move ons to the car! I am a big fan of keeping supplies in the car versus carrying them around. And we too love having toys and books in the car!

  2. I need to get one of those buckets for our car! This weekend when we were traveling, I so needed some organization in the backseat. And Huggies diapers and wipes are still our favorite, too. ;)

  3. Having a stocked car kit has saved my bacon numerous times!!!

  4. I need to restock the car stash! I'm terrible at changing out seasonally appropriate clothing and diaper sizes, although Aria isn't in diapers anymore so that says how long it has been since I went through it. oops. Love your list, and love that fun bag too!

  5. I need to update our car kit to include newborn things again!

  6. I have a car kit in my van that I just updated and plan to share on my blog. I love keeping things in my van instead of having to lug it all around with me. I'm never usually so far that I can't run back to grab something if I need to. We are so similar too because I keep so many of the same things in my car kit. Ha ha! Mommas think alike for sure!

  7. I have that same little bin in our car for that same purpose! Only, I haven't been too great about making sure it is freshly stocked and always has what we need/might need. I think it's such a good idea to have those extra clothes, diapers, and things in the car and of course toys and books are a must!

  8. I have a very similar car kit! My husband likes to tease me about having too much stuff in my car, but guess what? It gets used!!!

  9. I love your emergency kits!! So smart. I've got a puny stash of things, but I'm taking your list to heart and stocking up. Toddlers and babies need so many things and it would be nice to know my car is stocked and ready to go when my brain forgets the essentials in my diaper bag. Thank you for your complete list :)

  15. I love the baskets with handles. We are past the baby stage so now our emergency kit looks different (folding chairs, kleenex, soccer ball, blankets and sanetizer) but we always had an extra pack of diapers, clothes and toys in the car. I was always forgetting our diaper bag!

  16. Love this! Having a car emergency kit is so important with kids.

  17. Great idea versus carrying everything in a big diaper bag. My only issue was when they were sick and the vomit - they just never seem to quite make any container - poor wee sick ones.

  18. Love the pictures of Sadie and the Huggies boxes!

  19. This is genius! I seriously wish I would have thought of this 10 years ago. I always took a giant bag with me everywhere and hated every second of it. If I ever get to have another one I will be totally doing this!

  20. Why are your kids so cute! I know this is about emergency car kit which is great...but your kiddies are real models!!

  22. I remember having two container buckets in my car when my daughter was a baby until the time she was 6 years old. One was a similar diaper system essentials, and the other one was all about toys. I wanted to make sure she was comfy and busy in whichever environment we were in.

  26. I tried doing an emergency car kit once and then a year later, I still had size 1 diapers, 0-3 month clothing, and super old fruit snacks in there! Oops! I'm horrible at remembering to update items!

  27. We have something very similar in our car. I've said time and time again, that I will never be able to live without wipes. How did I survive without before?

  28. We have a car basket too and it is a game changer! Great post and I'm going to incorporate some of your tips for my car basket!
