Quick Update

I just got back from Texas....did you even know I was gone? I'm sneaky like that. I was there for 4 days. Now I'm back and my mom is here visiting. I'll post some pictures of my trip and fun with my mom soon. In the meantime, enjoy this shot of the corner.

Enjoying the Sun

We've been enjoying some much needed warm weather around here. We can safely say we are done with winter! It has been in the 70s and lovely outside. I snapped these photos a few days ago of the boys enjoying the sunshine.

The boys love soaking up the sun on the back deck.

Swan Family

The other day the husband and I went for a walk around our neighborhood. Have I ever mentioned that we have a small lake not too far from our house? We noticed a few weeks ago that there was a beautiful swan hanging out in the lake. We kept checking back with the swan and soon enough we saw some swan babies! So of course we had to snap a few photos of the cute little guys!

Isn't it pretty???

The babies...I want one.

Memorial Day Weekend

How was your Memorial Day weekend? Ours was great! We relaxed a lot, worked in the yard and in the family coming soon, I hope. On Saturday we went out with our friends Brett and Karri. Brett and the husband went to college together and played baseball together. Brett may look familiar to you because he was in our wedding! Karri is not only cute and fun but also has the best accent because she is from Australia! We always have a good time with these two! We went to dinner and then went to see a comedy show featuring Jon Reep, the winner of "Last Comic Standing." We hadn't really heard of him before but he was really funny and we had a great time. After his routine he threw some t-shirts out to the crowd and both the husband and Karri caught one! He was nice enough to sign their shirts and pose with us for a photo.

I have no idea what he is doing here. (Thanks for the pictures Karri!)

Here is a shot of Jon's highly appropriate shirt.

Missing Something?

Pancake is missing something. Can you spot what it is?
(By the way, do you like our new couch?)

It seems to keep mysteriously disappearing.

I think Henry has something to do with it. Can you spot what he is missing now?

His red collar is gone. I can't find it anywhere. I think he hid it from me. He likes being free. (And yes, we are watching Dancing with the Stars...don't judge.)

2 Years...

Today is my 2 year anniversary of starting my grown-up big-girl job! (click here to see my office in my post from last year...I wish it was still that clean!) I remember being so nervous and excited about starting my new career. And now I can't imagine working anywhere else. Like with most jobs it has ups and downs (like last week when I wanted to pull my hair out) but overall I do consider myself pretty luck to be here. I love the people I work with (well, most of them!) and enjoy my interactions with students (well, not always, but most of the time!).

Now that I have been here for 2 years I am no longer the new kid. Others have been hired, some have left. Changes have been made. Most things have stayed the same. I'm at the point now where I feel I fit in. I've established myself. I've asked for more responsibility. I've been trusted with important projects. And I've complained a lot....probably more than I should. I've laughed with co-workers. I've cried with my students. I've had students yell at me and lie to me. I've had students run in to my office to share exciting news. I've supported them through failed classes, bad grades, unsupportive families, feeling embarrassed in class, thinking about dropping out, loosing a parent, having a baby, getting married, feeling homesick, getting caught cheating on a test, being dismissed from school, trying to find a job and so many more. And I still have a lot to learn.

I don't always feel appreciated in the work I job is often very thankless....but I'm learning to be okay with that. The other day I received a hand written thank you note from a student thanking me for listening to her and helping her figure out some stuff. It really made me smile. Not many people (especially busy students) take the time to hand write a letter and send it in the mail. Small actions like hers make me realize that even though I may not always feel like it, my work is helping make a difference in someone's educational work matters. And that makes all the grief and stress totally worth it.

Locked Out

Last week I locked myself out of the house. In my pajamas. Yep...I was that girl. I was a big ball of stress last week due to my job, working late each night, and just being in a bad mood. I was so stressed and in a fog that when I went to the garage to put some recyclables in the recycle bin I locked myself out. I remember specifically messing with the lock so that it wouldn't lock. Did I mention that I was stressed out?

I locked myself out of the house but inside of the garage. So, of course, I obviously was not thinking clearly. I began to panic about how I was going to get back in. We don't have a spare key anywhere and the husband was too far away to come rescue me...and I didn't even have a phone to call him. So, I opened the garage to explore my options for breaking in to my house. Yes, I said it, breaking in. I did this all the time when I lived in right? Unfortunately for me, there were no options other than to climb up the deck and break through the sliding screen door....(I had left the slider door open so the kitties could look outside)...the screen was closed and locked but I figured once I made in on to the deck I could just cut the screen and be back in my house. Easy right? Wrong! I tried in vein to get up on the deck...but it was just too high. Note to self: don't try to use the contraption that holds the water hose as a step spins and you will loose your footing and end up hanging from your deck...still in your pajamas. Not that that happened to me or anything. I did somehow end up bruising my knee and banging up my hands in the process.

Needless to say I did manage to get back in to my house...but not by going through the deck as I had planned. I'm not going to tell you all how I got back inside in case one of you decides to come pay me a surprise visit. I will say it was much simpler that my original plan. (The method I used has now been fixed, so you wouldn't be able to get in that way anyway.) And now we do have a spare key....because I imagine this is not the first time this will happen.

Workin' in the Yard

Sorry for the lack of posting...I've had a stressful week at work. No excuse, I know, but still. Anyway, I thought I would share some pictures from last weekend. My in-laws came for a visit and spent the day helping us with our front yard. The house we bought was a foreclosure, so needless to say the yard was a bit neglected and in need of some major love. The flower beds were overgrown and there were still some dead leaves hanging around the plants and bushes. So we took advantage of the sunshine and set to work making our yard look pretty!

The in-laws working on the leaves. There were a TON. It seemed like we picked up leaves forever.

My man...doing something to the flower bed...lookin' good.

We also planted some roses!

I promise I did some work too...the photographer never gets her picture taken.

How much is that kitty in the window?

One of Pancake's favorite things to do is to look out the living room window.

Good thing we have two windows, because sitting there is one of Henry's favorite things too.
